Count Down
To Kindergarten

Expectations of children in kindergarten are changing. What can parents do to help their children prepare to succeed?

Calendars for children in kindergarten

Calendars are given to all kindergarten children in elementary schools throughout Elkhart County. The activities in the calendars reinforce skills taught in the kindergarten classrooms and provide additional support for those children who are struggling to grasp important concepts.

Young children learn by repetition. Skills taught in the classroom can be reinforced through repetition at home. The calendars give parents ways to teach those skills through games and fun activities.

Why do children struggle? Children enter kindergarten at varying levels of development. Their chronological age, physical health, and life experiences play an important role in their school readiness.

Some children have had preschool or daycare experiences, learning the social skills necessary to get along in group settings. Others have not had that exposure and enter kindergarten facing academic pressures, while trying to make the emotional and social adjustments to school.

Children may struggle in their adjustment to all day kindergarten. Young 5 year olds, especially, may encounter difficulty getting through many hours of full day kindergarten.

Many children experience a language barrier. They enter school with the pressure to learn English, when at the same time, they may be delayed in their language of origin.
